Charleston has a way of offering something different on every street. For Brent and Kristen’s engagement session, we moved through two of the most iconic areas of the city—starting in the French Quarter and ending along Broad Street. The result was a gallery that felt layered. Colorful and relaxed in one moment, structured and refined in the next.

Starting in the French Quarter

We began in the French Quarter, where the tone of the session immediately felt soft and exploratory. Cobblestone streets, pastel homes, and narrow alleys create a setting that invites you to wander. Kristen wore a flowing yellow dress—something that stood out beautifully against the muted tones of the buildings and added movement as we walked.

We moved through:

  • Queen Street
  • Church Street
  • Chalmers Street
  • Philadelphia Alley

Stopping where the light fell and letting the session build naturally from there. This part of the city feels lived-in. Less structured, more about the experience of moving through it.


Transitioning to Broad Street

From the French Quarter, we made our way toward Broad Street—where the entire tone of the session shifted. Here, the architecture becomes the focus.

Clean lines. Light-toned facades. A more structured, editorial feel. Kristen changed into a shorter white dress for this part of the session, which paired perfectly with the setting. It felt polished and intentional—creating a clear contrast from the earlier portion of the evening.


Classic Charleston Architecture

Broad Street is home to some of Charleston’s most iconic buildings, including:

  • Charleston City Hall
  • Charleston County Courthouse
  • United States Custom House
  • St. Michael’s Episcopal Church

The neutral tones of these spaces create a backdrop that feels almost architectural—allowing the focus to stay on the couple while still capturing the character of the city.


Timing Your Downtown Charleston Engagement Session

We photographed Brent and Kristen’s session near sunset, when the light begins to soften across the city. This time of day makes a noticeable difference. The buildings reflect light more gently, shadows stretch across the streets, and even the busier areas begin to feel quieter.


A Small Tip That Makes a Big Difference

One of the simplest things I recommend for downtown sessions: Bring comfortable shoes. Charleston’s cobblestone streets are beautiful, but they’re not easy to walk in—especially in heels. Having a second pair to move between locations makes the experience feel much more relaxed.

All within a single session. It allows for a gallery that feels dynamic without needing multiple locations across the city.
